Logergren, Five Others Commit to St. Scholastica

Head St. Scholastica Women’s Hockey Coach Jackie MacMillan has announced six more recruits that intend to play for the Saints, starting with the 2012-13 season.

Incoming freshmen include local product, forward Nikki Logergren. Logergren led the Northern Stars in scoring with 22 goals and nine assists in 25 games her senior season. Logergren also excelled on the softball diamond for Duluth Denfeld, being named the Duluth News Tribune Softball Player of the Year and intends to play for the Saints in that as well.

Another freshman newcomer from the state includes Roseau defenseman Ashley Kompelien. Kompelien was a member of the Rams’ Minnesota State Hockey team this past year. In 25 games, she scored two goals and added five assists.

Coach MacMillan also added a pair of recruits from the state of Wisconsin. Forward Brittney Berger, from Baraboo, Wis., played for the Madison Capitols 19U team who made it to the USA Hockey National Championship Semifinal. In 14 regular season games she scored four goals and had three assists. During the National Tournament she had a goal and an assist.

Defenseman Kelly Ahlgren, from Hayward, Wis., was an All-State second team choice for the Hayward-Spooner Hurricanes this past season. She was a top 10 finalist for the Molly Engstrom Award (Top Defenseman in Wisconsin). In three games vs. Minnesota High School teams this past season she had four goals and two assists for six points.

The final incoming freshman recruit comes from out east, in particular the Far East, as defenseman Itsuki Baba joins the squad from Tokyo, Japan. Baba is a member of the Japanese Under 18 National Team. She played in the United States this past season with Washington (D.C.) Pride Junior College Prep Team. In 40 games, she had three goals and 14 assists.

The last newcomer is another transfer for Coach MacMillan this season. Forward Samantha Moore transfers in from Division I Lindenwood University (Mo.) where she played in 18 games, scoring three goals and adding an assist her freshman season. The Lakeville, Minn. native was a top 30 scorer in the state of Minnesota her senior season at Lakeville South. She scored 20 goals and had 35 assists and the Cougars to the 2011 Minnesota State High School tournament with six goals and five assists in the playoffs.

Moore and the other five freshmen recruits join previously announced transfers Gina Dodge (Minn.-Duluth) and Teraysa White (New England College) to the 2012-13 recruiting class.

The Saints are coming off a second season which saw a six-game improvement from the inaugural year, more than doubling their win total in conference play to finish tied for fourth. CSS returns all-conference performers Monika Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftsschule KV Chur (Swiss National Team)) and Nina Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftschule KV Chur (ZSC Lions/Swiss U18 National)), both of whom won bronze medals for the Swiss National Team at the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Women’s World Hockey Championships in April.

The Saints will open their 2012-13 season at home on November 2nd against Concordia University (Wis.).
