Ben Nelson of the Proctor Rails has been named to the Northland Sports Online All-Area team and has been named player of the year for 2012. Nelson has helped lead the Proctor Rails to the boy’s state baseball tournament for the second consecutive season.

With an abundance of quality baseball teams this year, it is no surprise there were also a number of players who could have been player of the year. After a closer look at the group of elite players, the one thing that stood out is from the beginning of the season through the section finals; Nelson started nine games and pitched a complete game in all nine starts.

Nelson’s nine games broke the Proctor High School record for complete games this season. He broke Dale Nikko’s 35 year old record which dates back to 1977. Nelson, a junior has 16 career complete games and trails only his teammate Jake Lewis who is 18 for his career.

Nelson also has three relief appearances this season with a total of seven wins. He has pitched 68 innings, allowing only 19 earned runs for an earned run average of 1.96, which is second to his teammate Lewis.

Nelson also contributed at the plate for Proctor, he hit .391 this season including two home runs while scoring 14 runs and logging 23 runs batted in. Nelson finished second on the team in base hits with 34.
