Nelson’s Seventh Complete Game Leads To 15-2 Rails Win

DULUTH – Proctor defeated Duluth Denfeld 15-2 in five innings in a Lake Superior Conference baseball game at Wade Stadium.

Jimmy Merling led Proctor’s 13-hit barrage by going 3-for-3 with four runs scored and three stolen bases. Jesse Scanlon was 1-for-4 with a run scored, a double, and three RBIs. Ryan McCarthy was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Cody Dolsen was 1-for-2 with a triple and three RBIs. Jake Malec was 1-for-1 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a stolen base. Evan Scherber was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Jack Nikko was 1-for-1 with a run scored, two RBIs, and a stolen base. Ian Scherber was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two doubles, and an RBI.

Winning pitcher Ben Nelson (5-2, 2.01 ERA) threw his seventh complete game in seven starts this season. He allowed two runs on six hits, four of which were in the first inning, and one walk with no strikeouts.

Denfeld’s Dylan Rocklin was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a stolen base.

Losing pitcher Carter Bagley allowed eight runs on seven hits, one walk, and one hit batsman in three innings. He had four strikeouts.

Proctor’s Ian Scherber tied two school records by appearing in his 80th career game and by hitting his 17th career double. Both records were set by Tyler Pionk in 2011.

Duluth Denfeld (7-13) closed out its regular season on a seven-game losing streak.

Proctor (11-6) hosts Crosby-Ironton on Friday to finish its regular season.
