The end of summer is at hand for high school athletes who participate in a fall sport. Practice officially kicked off for all sports on Monday, August 17th and the excitement is building for athletes as they return to the playing fields, courts and cross country venues.

In Cloquet, the Lumberjack football team welcomed over 90 potential players with 35 freshmen reporting the first day of fall drills. Cloquet is coming off of their best season in years after making it all the way to the Section 7AAA championship game before falling to Duluth East at Public Schools Stadium.

The Cloquet girls soccer team will be under the guidance of a very young, but excited Dustin Randall who found out he was the head coach just a couple of weeks ago. Archie Clark will return to the sidelines to coach the CEC boys soccer team for another season.

Besides football and soccer, the cross country and volleyball teams also kick off their seasons, as well as girls swimming and girls tennis.

Recent rains have helped to rejuvenate many of the football fields in the area that were beginning to dry out, even with sprinkler systems running almost on a daily basis throughout June and July.
