An extra inning win usually gives one team a euphoric feeling and the other team a sour taste in their mouth. On Wednesday night the Silver Bay Mariners baseball team left Barnum with an 8-7 extra inning victory. While the Mariners drove out of town on a high note, the Bombers, who came oh so close, were left to wonder what could have been.

Barnum scored single runs in the first, second and third innings, while the Mariners tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the third making it 3-2 Barnum after the first three innings. In the fourth Silver Bay struck for three runs, but Barnum bounced back for a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the score at 5-5.

Then in the fifth, Barnum took a one run lead only to have Silver Bay even things in the top of the sixth and that is how things would stay until the top of the eighth inning when Silver Bay plated two runs to gain a 8-6 edge. It appeared as if Barnum would not give up any runs in the top of the eighth when they recorded two quick outs, but a walk to the #9 batter and then three consecutive hits allowed the Mariners to score the two runs and gain the lead.

In the bottom of the 8th Brandon Newman drew a walk with one out, then, with 2 outs Jake Naslund hit a hard long ball between the right fielder and the foul line that got to the fence. Newman scored and Naslund nearly scored in a close play but was tagged out as the Bombers nearly scored the game tying run on an in-the-park homer.

Thomas Ziegler led the Bomber hitting attack with a three hit night that also included two runs scored. Sam Kovanen and Jake Naslund both had a pair of hits for Barnum and both had a stolen base, while Kovanen added a pair of RBIs and Naslund one RBI.

The Bombers are now 6-7 on the season and will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Pine City.
