The Barnum Bombers girls softball team picked up a huge win on Tuesday as the Bombers defeated the Cook County Vikings by a score of 16-3 in Grand Marais. The Bombers quickly jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as the Bombers end a three game losing streak.

The Bombers, who went 1-2 in the Pine City tournament last weekend, and suffered a close loss on Monday to Rush City, score the most runs all season long, as they finished with a season high 16 runs scored.

Sophomore Lauren Hultgren was the winning pitcher Tuesday as she picked up her fifth win of the season with the big Polar League Conference victory. Hultgren allowed only 5 hits, while striking out 4 Viking batters. She only allowed two walks in the Bombers win.

Cook County Sarissa Falk ran into trouble in the first two innings when she allowed 10 bases on balls to the Bombers that created a huge lead that the Vikings were unable to overcome as the Bombers improve to 3-1 in conference play.

“Cook County was pretty shaken up in the beginning,” Barnum Head Girls Softball Coach Sarah Yrjanson told Northland Sports Online. “Their pitcher was shaken up by all the walks and the rain,” Yrjanson added “she allowed the ten walks to us before she was replaced.”

Cheyanne Johnson led the Bombers going 2-3 on the afternoon; she had a double and a RBI. MJ Anderson finished with three hits including a home run and she scored three runs for the Bombers in their victory.

The Bombers are back in action again on Thursday when they will face the Agates of Two Harbors in a Polar League conference match-up at Two Harbors. The Bombers improve to 5-5 on the season. Cook County falls to 4-4 on the season and they will play at Silver Bay on Thursday.
