MOOSE LAKE- Spencer Clough took the mound Thursday afternoon for the Rebels knowing that Moose lake-Willow River didn’t want to start the 2012 baseball season going 0-2 and definitely not starting 0-2 in the Polar League Conference play. The Rebels, led by Clough’s performance on the mound and timely hitting defeated Two Harbors by a score of 3-2.

Clough recorded eight consecutive strikeouts from the second to the fourth inning with top notch control at that time and allowed the Rebels to come back after falling behind on two unearned runs in the second inning by the Agates. Clough finished with 12 strikeouts for the game and both runs given up were unearned.

Two Harbors got on the scoreboard first Thursday, when in the second inning the Agate loaded the bases following a Rebels error and two bases on balls and Two Harbors third baseman Cole Myrdal hit a fly ball to center field which was knuckling and then dropped which allowed two runners to score.

The Rebels responded in the bottom of the third, tying the game at 2-2. Spencer Clough, who reached on a fielder’s choice and advanced to second base on a walk to Brad Fossum, then scored on a wild pitch all the way from second base. Fossum later scored on a Tony Adamczak single to tie the game after three innings.

The Rebels went ahead for good in the bottom of the fourth inning when Tyler Cisar, who walked to start the inning, came around to score from second base on a single to left field from Teddy Ryan. BJ Young had sacrificed Cisar to second base as he laid down a bunt down the third base line in which he almost beat out.

Darren Grukowski and Clough had the other two hits for the Rebels Thursday as they now improve to 1-1 on the season. The Rebels will play at Barnum on Tuesday afternoon in a Polar League Conference contest. The Agates fall to 0-3 on the season and they will host Ely on Saturday afternoon.
