The Duluth Amateur Youth Basketball Association announced they will be sponsoring the fourth annual DAYBA Boarder Battle between high school players from northeastern Minnesota and players from North Central Wisconsin with the series being played this year at the University of Minnesota-Duluth on Tuesday March 27.

The series will feature boys and girls all star games, and will showcase some of the region’s best basketball players. Wisconsin has dominated this event in the past, winning all three games on both the boys and the girl’s side since its inception in 2008. The first boys and girls matchups were back in 2009, with the boys game being a 103-102 overtime thriller won by Wisconsin at UWS.

The Border Battle will feature several local standouts including Savanna Trapp, the 6’8” Junior from Esko, which will represent the girls for Minnesota. Barnum will have two players on the Minnesota team, Katie Myhre and her teammate Claire Rodgers. Ashley Deschampe from Cook County, and Shamika Hopkins and Alex Freeman from Duluth East are also included on the Minnesota Roster.

The Boys game will feature a host of standouts including Lakeview Christian Academy’s Anders Broman and Luke Borchardt. Fond du Lac’s Kello Brown will join Taylor Stafford and Johnny Woodard from Duluth East; Austin Pohlen and his teammate Michael Spooden from Grand Rapids, Duluth Denfeld will have Andrew Laughlin and Derek Meger representing the Hunters and Duluth Marshall’s Eric Miklausich will also be featured.

The Wisconsin boy’s team will also feature Matt Iverson from Lakeland Wisconsin, the 6’11” senior who has committed to Northern Michigan next year will be featured on the Wisconsin side. Players are selected from an expansive area throughout northern Wisconsin and Minnesota to ensure the best talent available and are a minimum of 80% seniors.

The Minnesota Girl’s team will be coached by Dan Zbosnik from Mesabi Range Community College and the Boys team will be coached by Paul McDonald from Vermillion Community College in Ely. The Wisconsin Girl’s will be coached by John Bauer of Itasca Community College, and Damien Paulson from FDLTCC will coach the Wisconsin boys basketball team.

Things kick off at 6 pm with the girls all star game. At halftime of the girl’s contest, it will be a slam dunk contest tentatively set for 6:45 with the boy’s all star game to follow approximately 8pm.
