BARNUM- Coming off a heart breaking loss last week to Esko, the Barnum Bombers were looking to rebound and win their final game of the regular season against the Rebels of Moose Lake-Willow River. Thursday night, they did just that in an impressive fashion as the Bombers knocked off the Rebels 66-29 in a Polar League Battle to end the regular season on a winning note.

The Bombers jumped out early and built a 17-3 lead, just minutes into the game. They continued to add to their score as the Bombers pressure defense forced the Rebels into several first half turnovers. At times, the Rebels also were forced to alter their shot selections and how they ran their offense because of the Bombers defensive effort.

“Our defense really showed up tonight,” Head Coach Randy Myhre stated to Northland Sports Online. “We needed that one and the girls really worked hard doing the small things defensively.” Myhre added that “we are healthy and we will be back to 100 % as the post season beings. If we play defense like we did tonight we can make a deep playoff run.”

The Bombers held the Rebels to only 11 first half points as the Bombers led 44-11 at the break. The Bombers however didn’t do it in normal fashion by draining three pointers however; it was the Bomber offense working the ball inside to Katie Myhre and Claudia Turner, who penetrated frequently to the basket and were fouled and sent to the free throw line ten times in the first half alone.

Turner, who was 10-10 from the free throw line, up her string to 12 in a row before finally missing to finish 12-14 from the charity stripe. Turner, who scored 22 points in the first half for Barnum saw Katie Myhre work her game inside as she score 17 second half points to finish with 29 on the night. Barnum would also capitalize on scoring 30 points on the night off of Moose Lake-Willow River turnovers.

The Bombers were led by Myhre and her 29 points, Turner was next with 24, Claire Rodgers scored 8, Peyton Bushey scored 3, and it was Caitlin Rodgers finishing with 2 points on the night. The Rebels were led by Adri Jusczak, who finished with 10 points. Hayley Johnson finished with 7, Taylor Miller added 5, Shaelyn Halverson had 3, Olivia Bennett and Kayla Radel each chipped in with 2 for the Rebels.

The Bombers finish the season 21-5 overall and will begin Section 7A action next Thursday night at Hermantown High School at 6pm. The Bombers will face the winner of the Wrenshall and Silver Bay game that is being played on Tuesday.

The Rebels finish a very good 2011-2012 campaign with a 17-9 record on the season. They are in action on Wednesday night in Section 7AA playoffs and will host an opening round game at 7:00 pm Wednesday in Moose Lake.
