LeShae Brooks, Darby Youngstrom, and Destinie Villeburn combined for 58 points Thursday night as the state’s fourth ranked Grizzles knocked off the Barnum Bombers 71-50 in a section match-up at Barnum High School.

The first half was a high scoring affair with both teams battling to a very close four point game at the half with Northwood’s leading 39-35. The second half saw the Grizzles dominate the game offensively as they outscored Barnum 32-15.

The Grizzles rolled in the second half with a balanced scoring attack while Barnum struggled as they only had three girls who scored all night. Katie Myhre nailed seven 3-pointers in the loss, but it wasn’t enough as Barnum fell by 21 points.

The Grizzles used the balanced scoring as Brooks led all scorers with 25 points on the night, Youngstrom added 19, and it was Villeburn chipping in with 14 in the Northwood’s victory. Amber Zapata added 5 points, while Tessa Mankus and Rachel Harmston each with 3 points and it was Marissa LaPatka ending with 2.

Barnum was led by senior Katie Myhre who poured in 31 points on the night, including her seven 3-pointers; Claire Rodgers added 10 points, and Claudia Turner closed the Bombers scoring with 9 points. Turner and Rodgers each added a 3-pointer in the loss.

The Bombers fall to 17-4 on the season and they will need to regroup quickly as they face Cook County on Friday night in Grand Marais. The Bombers will face McGregor on Thursday in another Polar League contest.

The Grizzles improve to 18-0 on the season with the section win Thursday night. They are back in action again next Thursday when they will host the Carlton Bulldogs in another Section 7A match-up at home.
