Josh Cisar had a game for the ages in Moose Lake Area’s 13-5 win over North Branch on Saturday. Cisar broke and tied several Minnesota State High School League records by scoring eight goals in one game.

Cisar had a hat trick in the first period, a single goal in the second and a four goal outburst in the third period to put himself in second place in the record books for goals scored in a single game. The record of 12 goals in one game is held by Max Oshie of Warroad who set the record back in 1948.

mark, which was held by four people including MLA alum Michael Unzen and John Mayasich of Eveleth. Unzen tied the record with seven goals against Ely in 2009 while Mayasich’s seven goal game dates back to 1951. Others reaching the seven goal mark were Dan Billiar of Mankato East/Loyola and Ben Hanowski of Little Falls. Like Unzen, both Billiar and Hanowski reached the seven goal mark in 2009.

In addition to the goals per game record, Cisar broke the MSHSL points in a game record by tallying two assists for a total of 10 points. The previous record was nine points which was held by Schuyler Adams of New Prague. Four others including Mayasich have tallied eight points in a game.

Cisar also tied the MSHSL record for goals in a period with four, which was held by Mayasich. Cisar is in good company with Mayasich, who was recently ranked #1 of the top 100 hockey players in Minnesota history by MN Hockey Hub. Mayasich helped Eveleth win four consecutive state titles (1948-51) and played on the 1956 and 1960 Olympic teams.

Scoring in bunches is nothing new for Cisar, who leads the state in both goals and points with 51 goals and 78 points. He scored five goals in the opening game of the season in an 11-5 win over Eveleth-Gilbert. Cisar has scored four goals twice and has five hat tricks in 20 games this season.

Cisar also helped the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels to a 2011 state Class AA runner up title in football. As a running back, Cisar eclipsed the the 1000 yard mark with 1076 yards rushing on 87 carries, scoring 22 touchdowns. He also recorded 39 tackles and five interceptions as a linebacker.

Josh Cisar is joined atop the state scoring leaders by his brother Tyler, who is second in the state with 37 goals and 71 total points.
