The hosting Carlton Bulldogs defeated the Barnum Bombers Wednesday in the Section 7A boys baseball tournament. The
Bulldogs advanced with an 11-3 win. This was the second time this season that the Bulldogs defeated Barnum. Carlton downed the Bombers 10-5 in their first meeting. The win was impressive for the Bulldogs because they were able to advance in the section
tournament. However,
Carlton
ran into a buzz saw in Deer River losing 4-1 as their season came an end.

“We came out fast,” head coach Scott Battaglia told Northland Sports Online. “Barnum gave us a few extra outs in the first two innings.” Carlton built up a 3-0 lead after one inning and 9-0 after two innings. “We were well in front when Barnum scored their three runs,” Battaglia added. “The game wasn’t the best game we played but a win is a win at tournament time.”

Caleb Hatfield was the winning pitcher for the Bulldogs, giving up two hits in the winning performance. Hatfield, Chase Jokinen and Ben Rapp provided the offense as they all finished with two hits. Kyle Duesler continued with his impressive season adding two hits in the loss. Barnum finishes 9-11 on the season.

Carlton then went on to meet Deer River in the section quarterfinals. The Warriors downed Carlton 4-1. It was a close game with Carlton having many chances to capitalize but “we didn’t come through when we had our chances,” Battaglia would say. The Bulldogs Adam Schmitz and Jordan Thompson had two hits in the loss for the Bulldogs.

With the loss Carlton’s season ends with a record of 11-9, their best season in several years. The future looks bright for Carlton with several returning underclassmen that should make the Bulldogs very competitive again next season.
