Samantha Peterson wins AA Herb Brooks Award

Roseau’s Samantha Peterson has left her mark on the northern Minnesota community. After all, she participates in three varsity sports, school leadership programs and numerous avenues of volunteerism that better the community and the individuals she serves.

“Samantha is extremely committed to the hockey team and the school,” Roseau coach Amanda Giles said. “She volunteers many hours to local youth teams to help the school and the community of Roseau.”

For her impact, Peterson was selected the Class AA recipient of the Herb Brooks Award on Saturday during the Minnesota State High School League’s Girls Hockey State Tournament. The annual award is presented to a state tournament participant that strongly represents the values, characteristics and traits that defined Herb Brooks, a St. Paul native that gained international fame as a hockey coach. The award commemorates the unending influence that Brooks had on the sport of hockey, not just in Minnesota, but throughout the world.

Peterson helped the Rams to a sixth-place finish in the Class AA tournament and a 19-12-0 season.

“Samantha, as a team captain, demonstrates her impeccable leadership skills every day at the rink with her positive interactions with teammates and coaches,” Giles said. “She has a fantastic attitude and her willingness to hold people accountable to the Roseau standards, even if it may make her unpopular.”

Peterson’s unselfish play and emphasis on team has made a have made a significant impact.

“Samantha is always willing to help out a teammate in need and is willing to play whatever role the coaching staff tasks her with because she understands that putting the team first is important for our team’s success,” Giles said.
