John Scheuer had a big game in goal with 36 saves on 39 shots, many of those big saves, but it wasn’t enough as the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys hockey team dropped a tough 3-2 home loss to visiting Grand Rapids.

The teams split first period goals with Avery Peterson scoring for the Thunderhawks at 9:49 and Westin Michaud scoring on a hard rush to the net for the Jacks at 15:26. Michaud’s goal was assisted by Beau Michaud. Through one period the Thunderhawks held a 14-8 shot advantage.

The lone goal of the second period was scored by Travis Underwood of the Thunderhawks on the power play at 14:02 and Grand Rapids held a 2-1 lead after two periods. Grand Rapids outshot CEC 14-4 in the second and Scheuer kept his team in the game with a variety of big saves. Through two periods CEC was outshot 28-12.

Late in the third period things took a tough turn for the Jacks when they took a bench penalty and Grand Rapids responded with another power play tally this one from Nick Koerbitz at 12:26 for a 3-1 lead. However, Westin Michaud responded again with his second goal of the night at 13:18 and the Jacks were right back in the thick of things for the end of the third period that was a wild frantic pace to the finish.

The Jacks were outshot 11-9 in the final period, but the strong play of Scheuer was the highlight of the night, along with Michaud’s scoring, for CEC who will play
Denfeld on Thursday night.
