The Cloquet-Carlton girls soccer team playing in its first state tournament since 2012 saw a late rally come up just short as the Stars of Holy Angels Academy held on to defeat the Lumberjacks 4-3 in the state quarterfinals Thursday night in Lindstrom.

Holy Angels scored four first half-goals and held on to defeat Cloquet-Carlton 4-3 in a Class 1A quarterfinal Thursday at Chisago Lakes High School.

The Stars’ Sydney Burns scored on a crossing pass from Ciara McCrory in the second minute. Claire Lang, Hailey VonSee and Mia Van der Heide also scored for the third-seeded Stars (17-2-1), who yielded two second-half goals.

Cloquet-Carlton freshman Alexa Snesrud scored twice, including one on a chip shot over Holy Angels’ goalie in the 73rd minute to make the score 4-3. The Lumberjacks’ Hannah Biebl was also credited with a goal.
