Jacks Take Wayzata To Overtime, But Fall 3-2

Cloquet-Esko-Carlton could not hang on for the win in Saturday’s game against Wayzata. The Jacks
took a 1-0 lead late into the third period, but Wayzata managed a pair of late third period goals to tie the score and then score early in overtime to secure the win.

Katie Beckman played stellar in the nets for the Jacks as she finished with 38 saves on 42 shots, but it wasn’t enough as the Jacks struggled on the power play. CEC finished 1-for-5 with a man advantage and that eventually caught up with them as Wayzata made a late-game rally.

After a scoreless first period the Jacks finally got on the board when Kelly Carlson scored on the power play at 11:34 of the second period with assists to Megan Nelson and Carley Esse. That would be the only goal of the period.

Wayzata finally started the third period on the power play and their rally to begin when Allison Kirk slipped the puck past Beckman with Allison Fischer and Becca Senden adding assists. Then at 7:40 the Trojans took their first lead when Taylor Kramer scored an unassisted goal.

Carlson worked her magic again in the third period when she scored at 14:35 as Emily Gustafson and Dalyce Gustafson assisted the tally and with just over two minutes remaining they tied the game at 2 apiece.

In overtime Wayzata outshot the Jacks 3-1 and the final shot was by Sophia Shaver with just 1:34 gone in overtime to give the Warriors the shocking come-from-behind victory over CEC.

The loss for CEC was made possible by the work of Wayzata in the final period when they outshot the Jacks 18-6 in the third period. For the game the Jacks were outshot 43-22, but once again stellar goaltending kept the Lumberjacks in the contest until the very end.
