ST.PAUL – It was a busy day at Hamline University in St. Paul yesterday. The Minnesota State High School Boys and Girls State Track Meet got underway with preliminaries in most events and finals held in four events.

NSO area athletes did their best to make their mark and a few found their way into the finals which will be held on Saturday.

Marissa Shady of Esko had a superb performance in the 400 meter prelims by finishing in a personal best of 58.75 seconds, which seeds her second in the finals today. Shady’s time betters her qualifying time of 59.91 by over a second.

Caitlyn Lilly, also of Esko, will get a crack at the 300 meter hurdle title today as well. Lilly ran a time of 46.35 seconds which gave her the 8th best time and a seed into the finals.

Esko’s Max Reinertson finished fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 42-09. Reinertson had a longer jump in the prelims of 43-04. Two Harbors native Caleb Hamp-Sill was the winner in the event with a jump of 43-11. Hamp-Sill will look for the sweep today when he competes in the long jump, where he is seeded #1 with a qualifying jump of 21’-08-1/2”.

Other local girl athletes competing were Micayla Westendorf of Proctor with a 17th place finish in the 100 meter hurdles and Alyson Glumac of Esko, who finished 16th in the 100 meter dash while running into a stiff wind. Glumac’s Esko teammate Janae Beaudot finished 13th in the high jump. In the 3200 meter run Esko’s Kallyn Knutson finished 14th with a time of 11:47.99 which was less than a minute behind the winner. Carlton’s Lindsay Dahl-Holm finished 16th in the same race with a time of 12:14.37.


Other local athletes competing on the boys side Friday were Ben Moonen of ML-WR, who just missing the cut in the 800 meter run with a tenth place finish. Moonen ran a 2:00.69 compared to the final qualifying time of 2:00.08 of Chad Austvold of New London-Spicer. Both Proctor and Esko had disappointing finishes in the 3200 meter run also where Matt Welch of Proctor and Jackson Lindquist of Esko just missed the cut, finishing 10th and 11th respectively.


In the Class AA meet held earlier on Friday, Corey Anderson of Hermantown finished in 19th place in the triple jump and Jared Anderson of Cloquet finished in 14th in the 400 meter dash.

The meet will conclude today in St. Paul
