Mora scored early, they scored often and they put the game away quickly against Esko on Wednesday. The Mustangs captured a 17-5 first-round Section 7AA playoff win over the Eskomos and ended the season of Esko.

Both teams managed nine hits in the win, but Mora put up two runs in the first, four in the second, five in the third and six in the fourth inning to take a 17-0 lead before the Eskomos rallied for five runs in the fifth inning. However, the Esko rally was far too late and the game was called after five due to the 10-run rule.

The Eskomos were unable to handle the hot bat of the Mustang’s number three hitter Jake Lindberg. The junior centerfielder smacked out three hits and drove in eight runs for Mora. In all the Mustangs leadoff hitter, Mike Humphrey scored four times, the number two batter Tyler Kiel scored twice, Lindberg scored three runs and the number four hitter Derek Graves also scored a run. The four accounted for 10 runs scored and 14 RBI’s.

Zach Wirtanen drove in a pair of runs for the Eskomos who could not score a run off starter Anthony Pasillas. Pasillas went the first four innings and fanned eight Esko hitters.

The Eskomos were led by Tyler Gregg and Corey McDonnell with two hits each, Zach Wirtanen had a hit and two RBI’s while five different Eskomos scored in the loss.

Mora will now move on to play Hibbing today in Nashwauk.
