Some of the Proctor baseball team’s wins this season were tight 2-1 victories, some were blowouts, like Monday’s 21-3 road win over Aitkin, but they have all ended up in the win column, making the Rails a perfect 10-0 on the season.

In a game that looked competitive on paper, the Rails dismantled a solid 11-4 Aitkin squad on Monday, blowing the game open early by jumping out to a 9-0 lead after two innings. Proctor’s large early lead was highlighted by a two run homer by Ryan McCarthy. McCarthy then added a grand slam, his third of the season, in the fourth inning when he took a first pitch fastball and deposited it well over the left center field fence to give Proctor a 15-1 lead at that point. The Rails would add another two runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to close thing out with a 21-3 final margin.

“We’re fortunate that all nine of our players are pretty good hitters,” Proctor Head Coach Kyle Wojtysiak explained to Northland Sports Online. Adding, “Today we took our time, had good at bats and hit the ball hard.” The Rails totaled 19 hits on the night.

Jesse Scanlon reached base and scored in all five of his at bats, Scanlon reached on three singles, a walk, and beat out a throw to first on a dropped ball strike out.

McCarthy also had a huge night with a single and the two home runs. All-in-all McCarthy left town with three runs scored and an eight RBI night. With his efforts on Monday, McCarthy set a new PHS single-season RBI record. He now has 29 RBIs. The previous school record belonged to Jon Kent, who had 28 RBIs in 2007

Others helping out on the night for the Rails were Justin Scanlon, who added a single, a double and scored three runs, Evan Scherber who was 4-4 with a double, three RBI’s and a run scored, and Cody Dolson
who went
3-4 with a double, two runs scored and four RBI’s.

Ben Nelson (3-0, 1.81 ERA) pitched three innings for the win. He allowed one run on four hits and zero walks. He had three strikeouts.

Monday was the beginning of a busy week for the Rails, who will play a total of five games in six days, weather permitting of course. Tuesday they will travel to Marshall and then host Hermantown on Thursday,
a game that
will showcase
two of the top teams in the upcoming Section 7AA playoffs. Friday sees the Rails traveling to Eveleth-Gilbert, then return home for a Saturday 3:00pm Matinee game against Shanley.
