UMD – The Chisholm Bluestreaks claimed the Section 7A title Friday evening and advance to the Minnesota Class “A” state tournament. Behind 23 points from Sioka Latu and a tough defense that held the state’s leading scorer, Anders Broman to roughly half his season average, the Bluestreaks defeated Lakeview Christian Academy by a score of 74-59.

Chisholm came in as the number one seed in sub-section 2 while Lakeview Christian came in as the one seed in sub-section 1. The Bluestreaks advanced with a hard fought 64-62 win over a gritty Fond du Lac squad while the Lions had a fairly easy go of the semi-finals, defeating Mesabi East 75-60.

Tough defense and a strong inside game allowed the Bluestreaks to control the game from the beginning. Chisholm opened up the game with a 39-28 halftime lead, and then opened things up a bit more in the second half to claim the 74-59 victory and the section title.

Latu led the way for the Bluestreaks with his game high 23 points, including 14 in the second half. Joining him in double figures was Adam Vane with 20 points and Beau Bunich with 16. Others scoring for Chisholm were Aden Casey with 8, Tyler Simonson with 5 and Blayne Waselk with 2 points.

Anders Broman of LCA scored 19 points; teammate Luke Borchardt also hit the double figure column, scoring 18 points with a nice night in the low post. Andrew Ross added 8 points while Bjorn Broman and Ethan Lawler tallied 7 points each.

The loss is only the second on the season for the Lions, who finish the 2010-2011 campaign with an impressive 28-2 record. The Lions lose just one player, Andrew Ross to graduation, so look for them be a leading contender again next year.

Chisholm moves on the first round of the Minnesota Boys Basketball State Tournament with an overall record of 27-3. The Bluestreaks will take on Fosston, the Section 8 winner on March 24 at Williams Arena.
