Longtime Hermantown hockey coach Bruce Plante was named Co-Coach of the Year in Class A in the state of Minnesota on Tuesday. Plante, will share the John Mariucci Award, with Hibbing/Chisholm head coach Mark DeCenzo.

Joining Plante and DeCenzo was the Class AA Coach of the Year, Tom Sager, of White Bear Lake.

The awards were announced on Tuesday along with awards for the top player in the state as well as top goaltender. Kyle Rau, from Eden Prairie, was named the 27th Annual Mr. Hockey award winner for the state. The winner of the Frank Brimsek Award, an award given annually for the state’s top senior goaltender went to Alex Lyon of Lake of the Woods.

Plante led his team to the state finals for the second year in a row, but the Hawks fell in overtime in the state championship game to St. Thomas Academy. Hermantown’s only loss on the season to a Class A team was in the final game of the year in that loss to the Cadets. All other losses for the Hawks came at the hands of Class AA squads.
