Move over Keith “Huffer” Christiansen and Isaac Reichmuth. You now have some company and his name is Kasimir Kaskisuo.

Kasimir Kaskisuo

Kaskisuo was voted the University of Minnesota Duluth’s Most Valuable Player (Mike Seiler Award) for 2014-15 — just the third Bulldog freshmen to be so honored since that citation was first handed out in 1956-57, joining Christiansen (1963-64) and Reichmuth (2002-03), a fellow netminder in that exclusive group.

A native of Vantaa, Finland, Kaskisuo secured a spot on the National Collegiate Hockey Conference All-Rookie Team after ranking second among the nation’s freshmen goalies in victories (18), fourth in winning percentage (.557 off an 18-14-3 record), fifth in goals against average (2.30) and seventh in saves percentage (.917). Both his goals against average and save percentage were the third best single-season marks in program history.

One of just two individuals to see crease time in all of his team’s 24 league outings last season (the University of North Dakota’s Zane McIntyre was the other), Kaskisuo also shared the NCAA rookie lead for netminding starts and appearances (each 36).

The Hockey Commissioners’ Association Rookie of the Month for November backstopped the Bulldogs to the NCAA I Northeast Regional finals and also had one shutout (a 3-0 gem at the University of Minnesota on Nov. 14) to his 2014-15 credit.

In addition, Kaskisuo was bestowed with the The Jerry Chumola Rookie of the Year Award while senior right winger and two-time team captain Adam KrauseAdam Krause received both the Goldie Wolf Award (Most Inspirational Player) and Bulldog Community Service Award for the second year in a row.

The Mike Sertich Award (Most Improved Player) went to junior defenseman Willie Corrin, Willie Corrinwho established career bests for goals (three — his first three as a collegian) and points (nine) this season and finished the year at +8.
