Sophomore goaltender Eric Newman played the best game of his high school career and the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Lumberjack boys hockey team had just enough offense to tie rival the Duluth East Greyhounds 1-1 at Northwoods Credit Union Arena.

CEC got off to an extremely slow start in the first period and just three minutes into the period Lumberjack coach Dave Esse called a time out to try and implore his squad into more of a sense of urgency. Although their pace of play didn’t seem to increase in the first period the Jacks did manage to get the only goal of the stanza on a power play scramble in front of East goalie Gunnar Howg when Jack Kuhlman rammed home a rebound making it 1-0 at 13:48.

The Greyhounds continued to pressure the Lumberjacks in their own zone throughout the second period and finally capitalized when Ian Mageau was credited with a goal that appeared to carom into the CEC net off a Lumberjack player. Mageau’s goal came on the power play at the 4:20 mark and was unassisted.

While the Greyhounds peppered the CEC net it was Newman who held them off by standing tall and keeping them off the scoreboard the rest of the game.

CEC played a strong third period and had several chances of their own to take the lead including a couple of good opportunities in overtime, but unfortunately they also struggled to get the puck in the net much like East as both teams had to settle for the tie.
