Marshall Stops Hunters

Derek Farrell scored the game-winning goal midway through the second period as Duluth Marshall defeated Duluth Denfeld 4-2 in a Lake Superior Conference clash at Mars Lakeview Arena in Duluth Thursday night as the Hilltoppers rebounded after falling to Cloquet-Esko-Carlton on Tuesday night in Cloquet.

 

Peter Lenz added the insurance goal with 1 minute to play to seal the game for the Hilltoppers (14-4-2, 3-2-0), ranked No. 5 in the Class 1A coaches poll.

 

Farrel’s goal at the 7:39 mark of the second period gave Marshall a 3-2 lead and control of the back-and-forth game.

 

The Hilltoppers tested the No. 8-1A Hunters early as Marshall put 15 shots on net in the first period and took a 2-1 on goals from John McKenna and Levi Stauber.

 

Denfeld (16-6-0, 3-2-0) fought back to tie the game 2-2 early in the second period on Jake DeCaro’s second goal of the game, but the Hilltoppers erased the chance of a comeback with goals from Farrell and Lenz.

 

Marshall goalie Alex Murray made 25 saves, while Westley Cook finished with 33 saves for Denfeld.
