Northern Stars Skate Past Spartans

Sophomore forward Brionna Stafne scored two goals and added an assist to power the Duluth Northern Stars past Superior 6-4 in a high school girls hockey game Tuesday night at the Heritage Center.

The Spartans and the Northern Stars were tied 2-2 at the end of the first period. Superior scored the first two goals of the game before the Stars tied the game with goals from Izzy Sutherland and Olivia Ospahl.

Stafne and Ava Meyer opened the second period with goals to take a 4-2 lead, before the Spartans again tied the game following goals from Emma Peterson and Samantha Young. Stafne gave the Northern Stars a one goal lead early in the third period and Jessica Rowley iced the contest with a goal late in the third period.

Goaltender Syck Keelen had 22 saves for the Northern Stars, who improved to 7-9-3 overall. Emma Peterson had a pair of goals and an assist for the Spartans, and Missy Walkowiak stopped 35 shots for Superior.
