Lady Saints Notch First Win

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (csssaints.com) – St. Scholastica’s Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) grabbed a missed free throw went up the court stopped and popped a jumper as time expired to give the women’s basketball team its first win of the season Monday night 43-42 over Kenyon College (Ohio.).

The Saints led early, but a 3-pointer by the Ladies with 14 minutes to go in the first half gave Kenyon the lead they would not relinquish until time expired.

Kenyon led by as much as nine with 3:35 left in the first half before going into halftime with a 24-20 advantage.

Both teams shot only 28 percent from the floor in the first half with the Saints committing 15 turnovers.

Kenyon (3-6) extended its lead back to nine with 13 minutes left in the contest. CSS chipped away at the lead and a pair of Hovick free throws tied the game at 37-37 with 3:27 on the clock.

A 3-pointer and two straight free throws gave the Ladies a five-point lead again with 1:21 remaining. Hovick would make back-to-back layups to cut the margin to one with 30 seconds to go.

After Kenyon failed to convert the front end of a one-and-one at the free throw line, Hovick had a chance to give St. Scholastica the lead, but missed and the Saints were forced to foul again with just four seconds left. Again Kenyon would miss at the free throw on the front end and Hovick got the rebound, dribbled up the court, stopped at the free throw line went up and sunk the jumper as the buzzer sounded to give the Saints the 43-42 victory.

Hovick scored 12 of her game-high 15 points in the second half, including 10 of the team’s final 12 points. Kelsey Sorenson-Giffrow (Braham, Minn./Braham HS (Minn. Duluth)) added 10 points. Jenna Langer (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle HS) had a team-high eight rebounds. Bailey Dominguez led Kenyon with 11 points. Both teams combined to miss 19 free throws in the game.

The Saints (1-6) will face Anderson University (Ind.) tomorrow at 9 p.m. (ET)
