Saint Men Pick up First Win

WAVERLY, Iowa (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men’s basketball team picked up its first win of the season defeating Crown College by a final score of 72-44 Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Buzz Levick Tip-Off Tournament.

The first three minutes of the game saw CSS go up 10-0 on a run capped by a Jake Naslund (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) 3-pointer with 17:01 to go in the half.

After a small 5-1 run by Crown to make the score 11-5, the Saints would again go on another run, this time a 12-2 run which finally ended with a Tyler Rosenberger (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) layup with 7:55 remaining in the first half putting CSS up 23-7.

CSS would keep the heat on all throughout the rest of the half scoring a season-high 34 points in the first 20 minutes to go into the halftime locker room up 34-18.

The Saints kept up the pressure in the second half building its lead as high as 26 points in the first ten minutes of the half.

CSS solidified the win with a huge late run when, with 7:34 to go in the game and the score 57-32 the Saints rattled off 11 straight points to reach their biggest lead of the day, 36 points, at 68-32.  CSS would maintain that 30-plus point lead all the way until the last minute when Crown cut the lead to 28 points as time winded down setting the final score at CSS 72 Crown 44.

Andrew Laughlin (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) led the way for the Saints with 12 points, which was followed by Naslund and Nathan Carlson (Alvarado, Minn./East Grand Forks HS) who each had 11 points. Julius Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) and LaMonte Hall (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS (Saint Mary’s)) each added 10 points as well for the Saints.

St. Scholastica took advantage of many Crown turnovers, turning them into 23 points to just five points off turnovers for Crown. CSS also dominated down low with 36 points in the paint vs. 16 for Crown.

CSS (1-3, 0-0 UMAC) will be in action again next weekend when they play in the Merrill Thompson Tip-Off Classic Tournament which is hosted by UW-Superior. CSS will open that tournament Saturday at 6 p.m. vs. UW-River Falls.
