Lady Jacks Fall in Overtime

Courtney Ketola scored the game tying goal with 57 seconds remaining in the third period which would send the match-up between the Lumberjacks and the Orono Spartans into overtime, but the Spartans withstood the Lumberjacks momentum and pulled out a 3-2 win as Grace Limesand put a rebounded shot from Ellie Martini past Stacey Nelson for the win.

The Lumberjacks who had entered this contest with a 0-2 record were hoping to open the home regular season with a win Friday night saw the Spartans apply pressure all night on net minder Stacey Nelson as they came away with the victory. The Spartans scored the first periods lone goal as Sarah Harrison put the Spartans on the scoreboard at the 10:15 mark of the first period.

Courtney Ketola would tie the game at 1-1 when she took a pass from Mikayla Baker and as she was coming from behind the Spartan goal to center the pass it deflected off the Spartans Ava Lambert and into the net for the game tying goal. The Spartans would answer back late in the second period when Brianna Bren beat Nelson to make it 2-1 at the end of two periods.

The game remained that way until Ketola took a pass from Rachel McCauley went the length of the ice and beat Lambert for the tying goal which would send the game into overtime. In overtime both teams were searching for that game winning goal but it was the Spartans who picked up the win when Ellie Greiber made a pass out of the Spartans end past a Lumberjack defender which set up a 2-2 rush and Martini’s shot on goal was originally stopped by the Lumberjacks but the rebound was put past Nelson for the win.

Nelson stopped 31 of the 34 shots she faced Friday night, Ava Lambert was the winning goalie as she stopped 11-13 shots she faced on the night.
