CLOQUET- The Cloquet Boys basketball team closed out the 2010 Wood City Classic on Wednesday night with a loss to the Blake Bears by a score of 52-28. The Wood City Classic ended its two day run at the Cloquet Middle School, the former home of high school boys and girls basketball in Cloquet.

The Blake Bears opened up the first half against Cloquet going on a 13-0 run to give them a comfortable lead with no looking back. Dane Kiehn scored Cloquet’s first basket of the game to cut the lead to 13-2, the closest it would come the rest of the game.

Cloquet struggled against Blake’s match-up zone as they could not buy a basket only making three in the entire first half. The Bears led 26-7 at halftime with Cloquet only shooting 3-17 from the field.

The second half saw Cloquet continue to struggle as Blake continued to widen its lead, the Bears built up a 26 point lead near the end of the game and went on to win by 24 points, as Blake finishes 1-1 in the tournament.

The Lumberjacks got things going better offensively in the second half. Zach Peterson nailed a few three-pointers and Kiehn continued to pound the ball down in the low paint for Cloquet. Peterson led the Lumberjacks in scoring with 9 points on the night, Kiehn finished with 8, Adam Laine added 3, Andy Wappes, Maxx Brenner, Sean Ferrell, & Trent Moe all closed out the game with 2 points.

With the last game of the 2010 Wood City Classic finishing up, I had a chance to sit and talk to former boys coach Jerry Ericson who was a vital link to the history of this tournament, told Northland Sports Online, “this is a basketball gymnasium, this is where they need to play, the high school is great for practice and such, but this truly is a place where they need to play basketball.”

The Bears move to 5-3 on the season, they will be in action again on Tuesday when they host Minneapolis Roosevelt. The Lumberjacks fall to 1-6 on the season and will host Northwestern of Maple Wisconsin on Tuesday night.
