It was a rough start for the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls hockey team on Wednesday evening. The Jacks fell behind 3-0 to the Blaine Bears and eventually lost 4-1 in the consolation bracket of the Eden Prairie Mid-Winter Meltdown Hockey Tournament.

The Bears notched two goals from Brittney Thunstrom and a goal by Kiersten Falick in the first period as CEC started slow in the offensive end.

Emily Gustafson finally got the Jacks on the board in the second period with just three seconds remaining in the period with Jessie Ryan and Kalie Shevich assisting and CEC trailed 3-1 entering the final period.

Thunstrom stopped CEC’s hopes of a comeback with her third goal of the game at 11:13 and the Bears cruised to the win.

Alyssa Acheson made 21 saves on 25 shots for CEC, while Tara Hoverstack made 25 saves on 26 shots for Blaine.

In the opening round of the tournament, CEC fell to host Eden Prairie by a score of 4-1 also. The Jacks finish up tournament action today at noon when they take on Shakopee.
