ML-WR Boys Stay Perfect With Win Over Virginia

The Moose Lake-Willow River Boys netted a huge win Tuesday night as the Rebels knocked off the Virginia Bluedevils in a Section 7AA matchup at Willow River High School. The Rebels defeated Virginia, who were ranked 7th in the states class AA polls. The win keeps the Rebels perfect on the season and Virginia will fall out of the state’s top ten as they lose for the second straight game. The Bluedevils lost to Deer River last Thursday night at home.

The Rebels and the Bluedevils battled in a tough hard fought contest, with both teams trying to maintain an advantage. The Rebels won the battle in the first half as they took a three point 28-25 lead into the locker room at the break.

“It was a great win tonight” Head Coach Neil Dickinson told Northland Sports Online. “The kids played hard against a good team.” Dickinson added “Adam (Johnson) stepped up his game tonight it was awesome to see.” Johnson making his first start of the season made the most of it, leading the Rebels in scoring with 16 points on the night. “It was a great team effort,” Dickinson said. “There were so many kids that contributed to our defense effort; we rebounded well which was another huge factor.”

Trevor Nummela added 15 points in the Rebels win, Ryan Adamczak finished with 11 points, including two 3-pointers, Caleb Koecher added 7, Taylor Mattison scored 6 points and nabbed 10 rebounds, Abraham Young added 3 points, and Nick Tokar rounded out the scoring with 2 points. Besides leading the team with 16 points, Johnson also had two 3-pointers and contributed with 4 steals to help seal the win.

The Rebels are back in action on Thursday night as they try to stay unbeaten when they will travel to Hermantown to face the Hawks in a non-conference contest. The Hawks are coming off three straight wins and are playing extremely well as of late.
