Cloquet-Esko-Carlton picked up their biggest win of the early season in girl’s hockey on Thursday night when they defeated Duluth 4-2 on the road at the Heritage Center. Two nights earlier the Jacks fell by a goal to Grand Rapids/Greenway also on the road.

After a scoreless first period the Northern Stars nabbed the lead when Nikki Logergren scored at 4:55 of the second period to make it 1-0 for Duluth. That would be the last time the Jacks would trail in the game. At 8:12 Callie Halverson scored with an assist to Dalyce Gustafson tying the game at 1-1. Then at 15:33 Carley Esse pumped in a goal with Gustafson picking up her second assist to give the Jacks a 2-1 lead. Perhaps the key goal in the game came with just four seconds remaining in the second period when Esse notched her second goal of the game with Emily Gustafson and Kalie Shevich picking up the assists and the Jacks went up 3-1 entering the final period.

The only goal for CEC in the third period came when Emily Gustafson converted a pass from Caitlin Lilly at 9:11 to give the Jacks a 4-1 lead. Logergren added a goal with just 15 seconds remaining in regulation to cut the lead to 4-2, but it was far too late for hopes of a Northern Stars comeback.

In goal the Jacks got a sparkling effort from Alyssa Acheson who made 15 saves, while the Jacks pounded 39 shots on Megan Hansen who made 35 saves for the Northern Stars.
