Barnum Senior Jessica Newman will be signing a national letter of intent to play basketball at the University of Minnesota Duluth, and with the signing she will join her older sister as part of the Bulldog basketball team for the 2011-2012 seasons. Jessica will be signing her letter of intent on Thursday afternoon at the Barnum High School.

“I’m super excited” Newman told Northland Sports Online, “the school is where I have always wanted to played since I was a young girl.” Newman stated “we used to go up and watch (Justine) Axtell play when we were younger so to see her play there was like something I made up my mind to do also.”

Jessica will be attending UMD next year and will be once again playing basketball with her sister Katrina. The Newman sisters have been a very vital part of the success of the Lady Bombers over the past several seasons including a girls state Class A championship this past March, to go along with a second and third place finish the previous two seasons.

“Getting to play again with Kat is something I can’t wait to do,” Newman stated. “It’s nice to take the pressure off so I can relax and enjoy my senior season.” Newman added “this has been a strange year, being a senior and I was looking for my sister on the volleyball court and now basketball season without her will be a lot different, but yet a great and exciting challenge I am looking forward to.”

Newman has not decided what her major will be, but she hopes to work with kids in the future in some role, be it a teacher, a coach, a mentor or something else. The one thing that will matter most will be as Jessica stated, “I will get to play with my best friend again!” Northland Sports Online would like to congratulate Jessica on her signing today and wish her all the future success.
