Esko Dominates Section 7A Cross Country Meet

CLOQUET- For the second straight year the Esko boys and girls cross country teams captured the section 7A cross country meets at the Cloquet Country Club. The Esko boys team placed three finishers in the top ten, while on the girls side Esko had four finishers in the top ten to capture the section championships. The section 7A meet featured 220 runners, and there were 18 boys and 11 girls’ teams that had enough runners to qualify in the team competition.


In the girls competition it was Esko sophomore Marisa Shady winning the girls championship with a time of 14:46, her teammate Kailee Kiminski was second, Megan West of Mesabi East was third. Esko’s Erica Shady was fourth, Kallyn Knutson of Esko was sixth, and Gracie Otis of AlBrook was seventh.


Other local finishers in the section 7A meet included, Lindsey Dahl-Holm of Carlton who finished 22nd, Molly Meysembourg, Rachael Mills, and Kate Shelerud all of Esko finished 27th,28th and 29th. Katie Ring of ML-WR was 34th, Taylor Joyal of AlBrook was 36th, and Bridgett Tessier of Proctor was 40th.


The Eskomos team total was 37, Crosby-Ironton was second and International Falls was third. Proctor finished ninth overall, and AlBrook was tenth. The Esko boys total was 55 in team championship, followed by Crosby-Ironton in second place, and Mesabi East was third. Proctor finished in eighth place, ML-WR ended in twelfth place, AlBrook was thirteenth, Carlton fourteenth, and Wrenshall rounded out the boy’s team competition in 18th.


Proctor’s Matt Welch was the boy’s champion, followed by Kieran Scannell of Cook County, and Jackson Lindquist from Esko was third. Adam Eskuri was seventh for Esko and rounding out the top ten was Joey Johnson from Esko in tenth. Local finishers included Matt Rengo of Esko in 12th place, ML-WR’s Cody Coughlin was 23rd, Ben Hanson from Esko was 24th, and Zach Richards from AlBrook was 29th.


Both Esko’s boys and girls team qualify for the state cross country meet November 6th at St. Olaf College in Northfield Minnesota. Crosby-Ironton will also send both boys and girls teams to the state meet. Marisa Shady was the top local girls finisher last year finishing in 23rd place overall as Esko finished 8th in the girl’s team competition. The Esko boy’s team finished in 12th place at last year’s state tournament and Jackson Lindquist was to top boy’s finisher as he placed 21st overall.
