Carlton Football Gets First Win Of The Season

It has been a slow start to the season for the Carlton Bulldog football team but Friday night that all changed when the Bulldogs defeated Mesabi East by a final score of 30-22, giving Head Coach Dennis Korman his first head coaching win. The win puts Korman a mere 473 wins behind his college football coach, John Gagliardi. Gagliardi, the legendary coach at St. Johns University is the winningest coach in college football history with a total of 474 victories.

The first half saw the Giants score first on the evening as Nick Marcella ran one in from 15 yards out. Garrett Larson ran in the two point conversion and the Bulldogs Trailed 8-0. The lead was short as the Bulldogs tied the game with a touchdown on a 14 yard pass from Aaron Baker to Chaise Jokinen. The two point conversion was another pass from Baker to Jokinen and the game was tied at half at 8-8.


The second half saw the Bulldogs jump out to a 16-8 lead when Baker scored on a 2 yard run, Colton Godbout scored the two point conversion and the Bulldogs led 16-8. Mesabi East answered back with a Larson 4 yard run; he also added the two point conversion and the game was tied again at 16-16.


That was the last tie of the game as Carlton and Colton Godbout sealed the win with two straight touchdown runs, the first of 20 yards and the second of 14 yards. Godbout also had one two point conversion. Those two runs sealed the game and the Bulldogs first win of the season. The Giants added one touchdown late but it was of no consequence to outcome of the game.


The Bulldogs, with the win improve to 1-6 on the season and will face Polar League rival Barnum on Wednesday night in Carlton. The Giants remain winless and they will close out the season on Wednesday at home against Ogilvie.
