The Duluth Clydesdales home opener had everything the staff could’ve hoped for. A big crowd, Great hockey with back and forth scoring and a total of 5 lead changes. A penalty shot for the team captain and the game ending with a shootout after being all-even after 4 periods.

For the Clydesdales, it just didn’t end quite as they would’ve hoped. Duluth fell to Wisconsin 5-4 Sunday night before 617 fans at the Duluth Heritage Sports Center.

Duluth had big games from Matt Morsette of Two Harbors (2 goals, assist), Casey Eckman of Duluth (goal and assist) and last week’s SIJHL player of the week, Tom Paine (goal, 2 assists), but fell in the shootout 2 goals to 0.

The Clydesdales had plenty of scoring opportunities, putting 36 shots on net and ended up 2 for 8 on the power play as Wisconsin sent 10 men to the box in the game, but couldn’t hold on for the win after taking the lead with 7:08 to go in the 3rd.

The Clydesdales, Duluth’s upstart Junior Hockey League team which features a roster full of players who graduated from local high schools now head to Fort Frances to play the Lakers Tuesday night before coming back home to face the Dryden Ice Dogs Sunday Oct. 10.
