Local Stars Named To All-Tournament Team

MANKATO- With the 2010 girls state softball tournament complete, several members of the two local schools that took part were named to their respective classes’ all-tournament teams. Katrina Newman and Katie Myhre were named from Barnum in Class A. Megan Mullen, Julia Gilbert and Steph Thun from Hermantown were given the honor of being selected to the Class AA all-tournament team.


Katrina Newman from Barnum finished the tournament with two wins on the pitching mound. She threw her ninth no-hitter of the season against Menahga in the semi-finals. Newman finished with 32 strikeouts, while giving up only five hits and one earned run.


Katie Myhre from Barnum finished the tournament 3-for-7 overall with four runs batted in, including a bases clearing triple in the quarterfinal win over New Ulm Cathedral.


Megan Mullen finished 3-for-9 at the plate with a RBI. However, her dominance came on the pitchers mound when she threw a no hitter in the semi-final win over Mankato East. Mullen finished with 35 strikeouts in the tournament, giving up eight hits and only two earned runs.


Julia Gilbert finished the tournament hitting .700, going 7-10 overall with three multi hit games at the top of the line up for Hermantown. Gilbert finished with two stolen bases and scored three of the Hawks four runs in the tournament.


Steph Thun was also named to the all-tournament team after finishing 3-for-9 overall for Hermantown. Thun add several great defensive plays in right field and was a consistent leader for Hermantown.
