Barnum, Hermantown Players Lead All-State Softball Team

Katrina and Jessica Newman of Barnum, and Megan Mullen, Julia Gilbert and Ellen Folman from Hermantown lead the Minnesota Coaches Girls Softball Association All-State girls softball teams. Katrina Newman, along with her sister Jessica, were named to the Class A All-State teams. Mullen, Folman and Gilbert were named to the Class AA team.

Katrina is now named to her third all state team of this school year. She was named to the state volleyball team and the state basketball team, in addition to her recently being named to the all-state softball team. Katrina led the Bombers with seven home runs on the season and 31 runs batted in. On the pitchers mound she compiled a 15-1 record with an ERA of .15 on the season and 166 strikeouts.


Jessica Newman, a defensive standout all season long for the Bombers at third base, is also the Bombers leading hitter so far this season. She leads the Bombers with 47 hits heading into the state softball tournament. Her batting average is a remarkable .560 and she has added 28 runs batted in.


Megan Mullen is selected to her second straight All-State team. She was named to the 2009 All-State team as a junior. Mullen, who led her Hermantown Hawks to their third state championship last season, now looks to defend their title this year. She finished with a 19-3 record on the mound with 283 strikeouts. She also batted .422 on the season with two home runs and 39 RBIs.


Julia Gilbert, named to the All-State First Team this year, was an All-State second team member last season with Hermantown. Gilbert enters the state tournament batting .552; she has 48 hits and 10 RBIs. Gilbert was also named to the All-Tournament Team at last year’s state softball tournament.


Ellen Folman, a senior catcher for Hermantown, received recognition as one of the best catchers in the state as she was the third member of Hermantown named to the All -State team. Folman is tied in the team lead in home runs with two. She has a .418 batting average with twenty-five runs batted in entering the state softball tournament.
