COHASSET- Moose Lake-Willow River first year coach Andrew Miller was excited upon entering the sectional playoff game Tuesday against Duluth Central. The Rebels had won seven of their last ten games and were playing some of the best softball they had so far this season. They were hoping those factors would play into their success on Thursday. However, the Rebels found the road was met with a block by the name of Sarah Hendrickson.

Hendrickson, a freshman pitcher for the Trojans, dominated on the mound Thursday by allowing only two hits, while striking out eleven Rebel batters. Moose Lake-Willow River scored one run in the bottom of the seventh, but it was too little too late. The Trojans advance to the section semi-finals and will face Hermantown at 1:00 pm on Tuesday.

“They came out with determination and they were ready to play,” head coach Andrew Miller told Northland Sports Online. “Their pitcher did a great job for them, but I thought we could have been a little more selective at the plate.” Miller added, “It’s tough to lose one like this when we have such a great group of girls; it’s hard to see the season end. I am very proud of this team. They worked hard and showed many improvements throughout the year.”

Hendrickson helped her own cause for Duluth Central by adding two hits in the win. Carissa Davis, Gina Johnson, and Melissa Jarvi all finished with two hits for the Trojans as well. The big blow for the Rebels was a huge six-run second inning that, for all intensive purposes, ended all hope for the Rebels. Moose Lake-Willow River scored their lone run when Kim Ergen singled in the bottom of the seventh inning. She stole second base and scored on a single from Maddy Adamczak. Sam Johnson had the other hit for the Rebels.

Moose Lake-Willow River ends the season with an overall record of 11-6. The Rebels will lose five seniors to graduation Mary Moonen, Michaela Anderson, Katie Youngberg, Kim Ergen, and Molly Wasche. Northland Sports Online would like to wish the best to all the graduates and wish them well in their future endeavors.
