NSO-NEWS RELEASE

The UW-Superior women’s soccer team overcame a fair amount of adversity during their non-conference matchup with Bethany Lutheran Saturday.

Playing with a shortened bench due to injury and illness, the Yellowjackets rallied from an early deficit to score three straight goals before settling for a 3-3 double-overtime draw at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

Bethany Lutheran (1-3-1) took the lead 18:36 into the contest when Nicole Moldstad scored off a corner kick from teammate Asia Owens for a 1-0 Vikings advantage.

The Yellowjackets (0-4-1) responded quickly, evening matters at 21:24 as senior Rachel Rossiter (Twig, Minn./Proctor) looped a 25-yard shot over the head of Bethany Lutheran goal tender Averi Cash for a 1-1 score with 23:36 left in the opening half.

UW-Superior took the lead just before halftime as Rachel Wallace (Anaheim, Calif./Magnolia) netted her first tally of the season, firing a shot that hit the cross-bar and deflected in off Cash at 39:40 for a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.

Katelyn Adams (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) upped the margin to 3-1 early in the second half, picking up a loose-ball on the wing and making a long run up the sideline before depositing an attempt past Cash for a two-goal Yellowjacket cushion with 40:41 remaining in regulation.

Bethany Lutheran cut the margin to 3-2 at 81:32 when Moldstad scored her second goal of the game on a perfectly placed chip before Cheyenne Huereque sent the game into overtime on a breakaway at 85:36 for a 3-3 score after regulation.

The two teams traded scoring chances in overtime with the Yellowjackets nearly claiming the victory when Amelia Pennington (Twig, Minn./Proctor) followed up Adams’ shot from the near side during the opening moments of extra time. Bethany Lutheran’s defense turned away the chance however, preserving the 3-3 draw.

Wallace led the way for the Yellowjackets offensively with a team-leading five shots while Bailey Henderson (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul) made 14 saves in goal for UW-Superior.

Cash stopped four shots for Bethany Lutheran.

UW-Superior hits the road to face Finlandia on Tuesday.
