MN Wilderness shrugs off penalties, upends Austin, 3-0

The MN Wilderness Wilderness, which found themselves down a man often, weathered the Austin Bruins’ power play opportunities and emerged with a 3-0 victory in front of 1532 fans Wednesday night at Northwoods Credit Union Arena on SAPPI night in Cloquet.

The Wilderness were sparked by Richard Buri, who scored 4:28 into the second period to make the score 1-0 in favor of the Wilderness. Brett Heikkila provided the assist.

The Wilderness put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Austin to score on any of its eight power plays. Team’s forwards weren’t the only contributers offensively, and the team’s defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals.

MN Wilderness additionally got points from Jakob Romo, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Terry Leibo also scored for MN Wilderness. More assists for MN Wilderness came via John May, who had two and Darian Romanko and Nolan Culver, who contributed one a piece.

The Bruins excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances. Austin averages 28.6 shots on goal per game, but only sent 20 pucks on net against MN Wilderness. The Bruins did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Austin puts an average of 3.7 pucks into the net per game.

Kasimir Kaskisuo rejected 20 shots on goal for the Wilderness. MN Wilderness incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Justin Quale recorded 22 saves for Austin. The Bruins incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
