Minnesota’s most popular roller coasters and rides including Wild Thing are located just south of the Twin Cities in Shakopee. The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys hockey team must have thought someone moved the popular attractions to the Bloomington Ice Gardens on Saturday night. Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Lumberjacks fell in overtime to the Bloomington Jefferson Jaguars by a score of 7-6 in a wild up and down non-conference matchup.

The Lumberjacks, who
built up an early two goal lead, only to give up five tallies in the second period had to come from behind to tie the game late only to see the Jaguars score less than one minute into the overtime for the victory.

Alexander Robbel was credited with the goal 56 seconds into overtime to give the Jaguars the one goal victory as they open their season with the victory at home. The capper on a wild night saw a Lumberjacks defenseman try to clear the puck only to see it trickle into the CEC net and end the contest.

Tanner Robideaux and Beau Michaud both scored in the first period to give the Lumberjacks a 2-0 lead after one period.

The second period opened as the Lumberjacks were hoping to add to their two goal lead, but it was the Jaguars who scored the next five goals to give Jefferson a 5-2 lead late in the second period. The most controversial of which was the second and tying goal, which was let stand after Jacks Netminder Justin Ketola drew heavy contact and was knocked to the back of the net with his helmet off.

The Lumberjacks who continued to fight back saw two late second period goals cut the Bloomington Jefferson lead to 5-4 after two periods. Weston Michaud scored the Lumberjacks third goal of the game at the 14:37 mark of the second period and Beau Michaud scored
a little over a minute later to cut the lead to one goal.

Bloomington Jefferson scored the first goal of the third period to give themselves a two goal lead again at 6-4. But like the Jacks earlier two goal lead, it would not hold as Tanner Robideaux started the comeback for Cloquet-Esko-Carlton at the 7:38 mark to cut the lead back to one goal. Koby Bender then picked the perfect time to notch his first varsity goal, which tied the game at 6-6 at the 10:08 mark of the third period for the Jacks who saw the game slip away in overtime

Justin Ketola had 27 saves for the Lumberjacks in the loss and Grant Martens had 22 saves for the Bloomington Jefferson Jaguars in their overtime victory Saturday night. Robideaux finished with the three goals also added one assist for the Lumberjacks in the loss.

The Lumberjacks fall to 1-1 on the season and they will look to improve on that Tuesday night as they travel to Proctor to take on the Rails. Cloquet-Esko-Carlton will be back home Thursday night when they host South St. Paul at Northwoods Credit Union Arena.

The Jaguars start their season with a record of 1-0 with the overtime win Saturday. They are back in action on Tuesday when they face the Hopkins Royals in Hopkins and on Thursday they face Chanhassen in Victoria.
