CLOQUET- The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Lumberjacks scored the first goal of the game Saturday afternoon against Benilde St. Margaret’s, but that was going to be all the goals the Lumberjacks could get past the Red Knights Abigail Miller as the Red Knights fought back and defeated the Lumberjacks 5-1 in this non-conference matchup.

The Lumberjacks got on the scoreboard first Saturday afternoon when it was Mikayla Baker scoring her first goal of the season to put CEC in front 1-0 just three minutes in to the contest. Emily Gustafson and Makayla Langenbrunner assisted on the Baker goal.

The Lumberjacks held the lead for six minutes until Kaylee Druk scored to tie the game with the assist going to Kelly Pannek. With the game tied at 1-1, it was Caitlin Rielly picking up a loose puck and putting it past the Lumberjacks Alyssa Acheson for a 2-1 lead after one period.

Acheson, who faced 47 shots on goal Saturday, came up big several times throughout the game as the Red Knights fired shot after shot at the senior Lumberjack netminder. Anne Arnason scored a shorthanded goal for the Red Knights at the 8:15 mark of the second period to put Benilde ahead by a score of 3-1.

Reilly scored her second goal of the game for the Red Knights on a power play at the 13:06 mark of the second period as the Red Knight took a 4-1 lead into the locker room after two periods. Pannek picked up her second assist of the game and Sara Taffe also assisted on the Reilly goal.

The third period saw the Red Knights score the only goal of the period when Pannek scored on a shot over the shoulder of Acheson to make it a 5-1 lead and that’s where the game would end as the states number 2 ranked team remained unbeaten.

Acheson stopped 42 shots by the Red Knights Saturday afternoon while her counterpart Abigail Miller finished with 11 saves in the victory as Miller picked up her fourth win of the season.

CEC falls to 2-3-1 on the season and the Lumberjacks will be back in action again on Tuesday night as they will host Hibbing-Chisholm at the Northwoods Credit Union Arena. The Red Knights stay unbeaten as they improve to 5-0 on the season and they will host Lakeville North Tuesday night at the St; Louis Park Recreational Centers in the Twin Cities.
