Esko Basketball Program Excels Off The Court

  For the fourth consecutive season, the Esko girls basketball team has be named to the state all-academic team for the winter sports season 2011-2012. As well as the girls team being named all-academic; Esko’s Jackson Lindquist was named all-state academic on the boy’s side as well for the 2011-2012 season.

All-Star Game Highlights Best Polar League Talent

  The Polar League held its annual Polar League All-Star Games on Monday night in Barnum with plenty of flair and dramatics to go around for any basketball fan. Katie Myhre helped to lead the Black team to win the girls division, and on the boys side it was more of the same with Jackson Lindquist leading the black team to victory.

Fourth Annual DAYBA All-Star Game Loaded With Local Talent

  The Duluth Amateur Youth Basketball Association announced they will be sponsoring the fourth annual DAYBA Boarder Battle between high school players from northeastern Minnesota and players from North Central Wisconsin with the series being played this year at the University of Minnesota-Duluth on Tuesday March 27.

Eskomo Girls Back In Section Finals

  The Esko Eskomos once again have advanced to the finals of Section 7A and for the third consecutive season the Lady Eskomos will face the Braham Bombers with a trip to the state tournament on the line. The Eskomos  prevailed with a 55-38 victory over the Mora Mustangs Tuesday night at UMD.

Esko Girls Cruise To 69-13 Quarterfinal Win

  UMD- The Esko Eskomos took the floor against the Virginia Blue Devils Saturday night and very quickly it was easy to see the Eskomos were going to control the flow and tempo of the contest which the Eskomos picked up the quarterfinal victory over Virginia by a score of 69-13.

Rebels Season Ends In Quarterfinals

  UMD- Saturday evening as Section 7AA quarterfinal action got underway; it appeared that the Mustangs of Mora and the Rebels of Moose Lake-Willow River were matched up fairly evenly. Size, speed and quickness looked evenly matched on paper, but it was going to be the Mustangs who capitalized on numerous turnovers in the first half, and poor shooting as the Mustangs defeated the Rebels 68-42.

  ESKO- When the Carlton Bulldogs took the floor Thursday night against the Cook County Vikings, the Bulldogs had just watched the Cromwell Cardinals knock off the higher seeded McGregor Mercuries and hope was there for the Bulldogs to do the same. For 30 of the 36 minutes of this battle, the Bulldogs fought to stay with the Vikings; but in the end is was Cook County senior Ashley Deschampe who scored 42 points to lead the Vikings to an 82-64 win Thursday night.

Third Times A Charm For Cromwell Girls

  ESKO- With the Cromwell Cardinals and the McGregor Mercuries meeting for the third time this season basketball fans knew it would be a tight game. The outcome was different from the first two meetings as junior guard Christina Stenson buried a 3-pointer with three seconds remaining to give the Cardinals a 54-51 victory in the second round of the girl’s Section 7A playoffs Thursday night.

Hibbing Eliminates Hermantown Girls Form 7AAA Playoffs

  The Hermantown Hawks opened play in the Section 7AAA girls basketball tournament on the road in Hibbing. As quickly as the tournament started for the Hawks it ended at the hands of the Blue Jackets who raced to an 11 point halftime lead and eventually Hibbing went on to take a 62-46 victory and a chance to move on to second round play.

  The Wrenshall Wrens advanced to the second round of the Section 7A girls basketball playoffs on Tuesday night with a 60-43 victory over the Silver Bay Mariners at Silver Bay High School as the sectional playoffs began Tuesday night.

  The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) announced its season-ending awards in women’s basketball today, and several Yellowjackets have been honored. Highlighting the selections are head coach Don Mulhern, who has been named WIAC Coach of the Year, while senior Bri Davis (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) is the co-recipient of the Judy Kruckman Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete Award.

  MINNEAPOLIS - A statement that Katrina Newman made Saturday afternoon to Northland Sports Online, “It’s a dream come true,” captured the euphoria the Barnum Lady Bombers felt as they defeated the Wildcats of Goodhue to capture their first ever girls basketball championship. The Bombers took care of the Wildcats and went on to win by a score of 43-31.

Kello Brown Leads Minnesota Team To 135-75 Win While Wisc Wins Girls Win 85-69

  Kello Brown showed that he can run with the big dogs! Brown tossed in 29 points to lead a star studded Minnesota All-Stars team to a 135-75 victory over Wisconsin in the annual Border Battle held at Romano Gym at UMD on Tuesday night. The win was the first for the Minnesota All-Stars to go against three losses. On the girls side, it was Wisconsin posting a fairly easy 85-69 victory over Minnesota with Heather Bowe of Eau Claire Regis pumping in 29 points to lead her team.

  UMD- Friday night at UMD the Barnum Bombers were hoping to recapture the glory they had enjoyed while playing for four seasons in section play in Section 5A and enjoying three state tournament appearances; but on Friday it was the Rangers of Mountain Iron-Buhl who came from behind to down Barnum by a score of 47-42 and advance to their second straight state tournament.

  In a Section 7AA Finals game that had more of a feel of a state tournament championship game Thursday night, it was a Braham Bomber squad that would defend its section title and move back to Minneapolis to defend their state title as the Bombers knocked off the Eskomos by a score of 68-58 in double overtime.

  UMD- The Barnum Bombers have played in some many big games over the last several seasons so one more on Wednesday night seemed only fitting. Playing in their first Section 7A semi final playoff game since 2007; the Bombers defeated the previously unbeaten Northwoods Grizzles by a score of 56-55.

  The Cromwell Cardinals, who were seeded sixth in the Section 7A playoffs sub-section, pulled a mild upset on Thursday night when they defeated the third seeded Mercuries; and it looked as if it possibly could again Saturday night at Denfeld. But the Cook County Vikings would pull away in the second half to capture the quarterfinal win by a score of 69-51.

Grand Rapids Too Much For Cloquet Girls

  Grand Rapids used a shutdown defense to eliminate the Cloquet girls basketball team in the opening round of the Section 7AAA girls basketball playoffs on Thursday night. The Thunderhawks left little doubt early in the game that their defense would be far too stout for the Lumberjacks and Grand Rapids cruised to a 53-22 victory.
