  The Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) and The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) announced today that the two conferences have reached an agreement that will result in the WIAC members leaving the NCHA following the 2012-13 season - a year earlier than originally planned.

  The Minnesota Senior All-Stars Hockey Tournament was held late last week and over the weekend with a strong showing by Team Minnesota. Team Minnesota was coached by four coaches including Bruce Plante of the Hermantown Hawks and featured three of his own high school players and one player from Cloquet-Esko-Carlton.

  Previously known as Minnesota Selects, the Minnesota High Performance Hockey Series was played this past weekend in Plymouth, Minnesota with four players from the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton hockey program participating along with three local players from Section 5A.

  Move over Norm Maciver, you now have some company and his name is Jack Connolly. The University of Minnesota Duluth senior center landed American Hockey Coaches Association All-American honors for the third time in 2011-12, joining Maciver (1982-86) as the only Bulldogs to ever accomplish that feat.

  The 14th Annual St. Lukes Orthopedics and Sports Medicine High School All-Star game was held on Tuesday night at Amsoil Arena in Duluth. The game, formerly the CCM All-Star game, featured the Duluth Area All-Stars vs. the Iron Range All-Stars with Duluth Area coming out on top 9-5 in a game that featured nearly as much talent as a good college team.

  Section 7AA boys hockey brackets have been announced with the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Lumberjacks receiving the fifth seed. The Lumberjacks will begin the 2012 playoffs by traveling to number four seed Elk River on Tuesday February 21.

  With one game left to play in the regular season the Hermantown Hawks remain a perfect 24-0. The latest victims of the high-flying Hawks were the Little Falls Flyers, who dropped a 2-0 decision to Hermantown on Tuesday night at Hermantown Arena.

  Last week Karson Kuhlman, Westin Michaud, and Neal Pionk were selected from a group of 640 hockey players to participate in the Reebok High Performance U17 hockey showcase final 54 in Plymouth MN from April 21-22. The three showed all in attendance it was no fluke they were chosen as part of the final 54 players with all three finding their way into the scorebooks.

  Mike Dietrich’s second goal of the game during a two-man advantage with 11:36 remaining proved to be the difference as the Wisconsin Wilderness edged the Fort Frances Lakers 4-3 Wednesday in the seventh and deciding game of the Superior International Junior Hockey League’s Bill Salonen Cup championship final.

  The relentless pursuit of perfection continued for the Hermantown boys hockey team in the Section 5A semi-finals on Saturday. The Hawks soared to four first period goals and eventually a 7-0 victory over next door neighbor Proctor at Hermantown Arena on Saturday giving Hermantown another berth in the section championship game.

  Heading into overtime of their Section 5A quarterfinal game the Proctor Rails were looking for a hockey miracle. The Rails had given up two third period goals to Sauk Rapids-Rice which allowed the game to go to the extra session, and in the process saw their momentum slip away. The Rails dug an even bigger hole when they took a penalty, but relief came in the form of a Jeremy Lopez shorthanded goal that pushes Proctor into the semi-finals with a 6-5 victory.

  One goal achieved and hopefully still more to come for the Hermantown Hawks boys hockey team. On Friday night the Hawks picked up a 4-0 shut-out victory over Hibbing/Chisholm to wrap up the first perfect 25-0 regular season in the history of the storied program.

  The Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels started fast Saturday afternoon by jumping out to a 3-1 lead after one period; but were unable to hold the lead as penalties ended up plaguing the Rebels in the second and third periods and the Minneapolis Novas came from behind to down the Rebels by a score of 7-4 Saturday afternoon at Moose Lake Ice Arena.

  A few weeks ago the Duluth East boys hockey team pounded Cloquet-Esko-Carlton 7-0. Last night through two periods the Lumberjacks held the Greyhounds off to the tune of a 2-2 tie, however the depth of East paid off with a strong third period and they gained a 5-2 victory over CEC at Amsoil Arena in Duluth.

The #1 ranked Hawks left Cloquet with their undefeated record intact and the satisfaction of overcoming some major adversity in their 2-1 victory over Cloquet-Esko-Carlton.

  St. Thomas Academy overcame a slow start and managed to eke out a 5-4 overtime victory over the Hermantown Hawks in the Minnesota State High School Class A Hockey Tournament championship game on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks came out flying, but couldn't hang on to a three goal lead as the Cadets rallied for the victory.
