Hawks Win In Semi's But Fall In Finals

  ST.PAUL - After a story book season and two wins in the state tournament, the Hermantown Hawks closed their record setting season on Saturday afternoon with their first, and only loss, of the season. The Hawks fell 5-1 in the Minnesota Class A championship game to St. Thomas Academy to finish as state runners-up for the third consecutive season.

  The Minnesota Senior All-Stars Hockey Tournament was held late last week and over the weekend with a strong showing by Team Minnesota. Team Minnesota was coached by four coaches including Bruce Plante of the Hermantown Hawks and featured three of his own high school players and one player from Cloquet-Esko-Carlton.

  The 14th Annual St. Lukes Orthopedics and Sports Medicine High School All-Star game was held on Tuesday night at Amsoil Arena in Duluth. The game, formerly the CCM All-Star game, featured the Duluth Area All-Stars vs. the Iron Range All-Stars with Duluth Area coming out on top 9-5 in a game that featured nearly as much talent as a good college team.

  Last week Karson Kuhlman, Westin Michaud, and Neal Pionk were selected from a group of 640 hockey players to participate in the Reebok High Performance U17 hockey showcase final 54 in Plymouth MN from April 21-22. The three showed all in attendance it was no fluke they were chosen as part of the final 54 players with all three finding their way into the scorebooks.

  Heading into overtime of their Section 5A quarterfinal game the Proctor Rails were looking for a hockey miracle. The Rails had given up two third period goals to Sauk Rapids-Rice which allowed the game to go to the extra session, and in the process saw their momentum slip away. The Rails dug an even bigger hole when they took a penalty, but relief came in the form of a Jeremy Lopez shorthanded goal that pushes Proctor into the semi-finals with a 6-5 victory.

  St. Thomas Academy overcame a slow start and managed to eke out a 5-4 overtime victory over the Hermantown Hawks in the Minnesota State High School Class A Hockey Tournament championship game on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks came out flying, but couldn't hang on to a three goal lead as the Cadets rallied for the victory.
