  The Polar League held its annual Polar League All-Star Games on Monday night in Barnum with plenty of flair and dramatics to go around for any basketball fan. Katie Myhre helped to lead the Black team to win the girls division, and on the boys side it was more of the same with Jackson Lindquist leading the black team to victory.

Rebels Duo A Partnership On And Off The Court

  Last season while the Moose Lake Willow-River Rebels were playing in the Section 7AA basketball tournament, junior Caleb Koecher injured his knee early in the section championship game and it was the Rebels who were unable to overcome the injury and advance to the state tournament.

  The Braham boys basketball team, which was seeded second according to the Minnesota State High School League’s new QRF standings format showed why they were the team that was ranked number one atop the state Class AA polls all season long as the Bombers and Tyler Vaughn defeated the Eskomos 81-73 Saturday night at UMD.

Lakeview Christian Academy Advances To State Tournament

  The Lions of Lakeview Christian Academy advanced to the state tournament Friday night with an 80-68 victory over North Woods in the Section 7A championship game in Hibbing at the Hibbing Memorial Arena. The Lions will be making their first trip to the state boys basketball tournament next week in Minneapolis.

Lindquist's 35 Points Lead Esko To Section Finals

  Behind the Superb effort of Jackson Lindquist, the Esko Eskomos defeated a very pesky Deer River Warrior team on Thursday night at UMD by a score of 71-68 to advance to the section finals on Saturday night back at UMD. The Eskomos will face the Braham Bombers who defeated the defending section champions the Virginia Blue Devils also at UMD on Thursday night.

  The Hermantown Hawks battled the four time defending Section 7AAA champion Grand Rapids Thunderhawks tooth and nail for one half Tuesday night, but in the end it was the Thunderhawks defeating Hermantown 68-47 and advancing to the section finals for the fifth consecutive season.

  Last Thursday night at Barnum High School, Bombers senior forward Jacob Naslund entered the Section 5A quarterfinal contest needing only 18 points to reach 1000 for his career, and in the second half Naslund reached that plateau and added two more to the total.

  Anders Broman hit for 44 points Saturday evening as the junior guard for Lakeview Christian Academy broke Kevin Noreen’s all time state record for most points in a season. He finished the night with 1217 points and he’s still going to add to the total as the Lions defeated Silver Bay 112-92 and moved on in the Section 7A playoffs.

  MORA- Over the past five seasons, the Barnum Bombers have played sectional tournament games at Mora High School and has compiled a 5-2 record at Mora. On Saturday it was another victory, as the Bombers knocked off the Hornets of Hill City by a score of 63-49.

Bulldogs Come Up Just Short Against Mesabi East

CARLTON - The Bulldogs led 3-1 in the fifth inning and nearly got out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth, but Mesabi East scored two runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings to leave town with the 5-3 victory Friday at Chub Lake Park in Carlton.

  Kello Brown showed that he can run with the big dogs! Brown tossed in 29 points to lead a star studded Minnesota All-Stars team to a 135-75 victory over Wisconsin in the annual Border Battle held at Romano Gym at UMD on Tuesday night. The win was the first for the Minnesota All-Stars to go against three losses. On the girls side, it was Wisconsin posting a fairly easy 85-69 victory over Minnesota with Heather Bowe of Eau Claire Regis pumping in 29 points to lead her team.

Holquist Steps Down As UMD Mens Basketball Coach

  Gary Holquist, the University of Minnesota Duluth head men’s basketball coach for the past 14 years, has stepped down from that position to become the new director of development for UMD athletics. In 14 seasons at the head coaching helm, Holquist amassed a 206-197 overall record and earned a pair of NCAA Division II playoff berths , captured one Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference regular season title and two NSIC tournament championships.

  CROSBY- Friday night in Crosby Minnesota, basketball fans were treated a game of high school basketball right out of the old annals of high school basketball. The Barnum Bombers, who had fallen 17 points behind at one point, came back strong and took the lead, built it to six points with :55 seconds remaining only to see their state tournament hopes dashed as a desperation 3-point shot hit the rim, the backboard, the rim again, and finally fell through the basket as the Bombers fell to Browerville by one point, 75-74.

Barnum Boys Win Sub-Sections Move on to Section Finals

  MORA- In the spring of 2007, the Barnum Bombers had just capped off a state tournament appearance where the Bombers finished in fourth place, representing Section 7A at the state tournament. A few weeks after the state tournament, the Bombers found out that the Minnesota State High School League had a realignment of basketball teams, and one was the Bombers moving to Section 5A.  On Tuesday night, after three years of being eliminated either in the quarterfinals of semi-finals, the Bombers defeated the Royals of Royalton 69-51 to advance to the section finals.

Rebels Bounced From Playoffs By Top Ranked Braham

  The Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels found themselves in the Section 7AA quarterfinals as a three seed facing a number two seed. The main difference about this game is the number two seed is the state’s top ranked team by the associated press and Minnesota Basketball news; yet, with the new seeding format, the Rebels were put up against the Bombers. That number one ranking proved well deserved as Braham defeated the Rebels 68-35.
