  A significant problem, decades in the making, has risen to the forefront for Esko Athletics. In separate but related instances, the field lighting as well as the bleachers and press box were recently red tagged and put out of service, creating an embarrassing and potentially expensive situation for the football and girls soccer teams.

  The Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College softball team wrapped up their 2012 campaign by going 1-3 in the MCAC State Crossover Tournament held at Braun Park this past weekend. The lone Thunder win on the weekend came against one of the toughest teams in the MCAC Anoka-Ramsey.

  The Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) and The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) announced today that the two conferences have reached an agreement that will result in the WIAC members leaving the NCHA following the 2012-13 season - a year earlier than originally planned.

  After leading the Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College softball team for the past five seasons head coach Kerry Rodd will make this his final season. Rodd told his team prior to a sweep of Vermilion Community College on Thursday of last week and he notified Athletic Director Keith Turner and school President Larry Anderson of his decision to retire at the end of the season following the game.

  For the fourth consecutive season, the Esko girls basketball team has be named to the state all-academic team for the winter sports season 2011-2012. As well as the girls team being named all-academic; Esko’s Jackson Lindquist was named all-state academic on the boy’s side as well for the 2011-2012 season.

  Gary Holquist, the University of Minnesota Duluth head men’s basketball coach for the past 14 years, has stepped down from that position to become the new director of development for UMD athletics. In 14 seasons at the head coaching helm, Holquist amassed a 206-197 overall record and earned a pair of NCAA Division II playoff berths , captured one Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference regular season title and two NSIC tournament championships.

  Last season while the Moose Lake Willow-River Rebels were playing in the Section 7AA basketball tournament, junior Caleb Koecher injured his knee early in the section championship game and it was the Rebels who were unable to overcome the injury and advance to the state tournament.

  The Minnesota State High School League recently recognized eight high school seniors as recipients of the Triple “A” Award. The Triple “A” Award recognizes select high school seniors who have demonstrated excellence in academics, arts, and athletics. Among the winners of the prestigious award this year was Esko senior Kate Shelerud.

   The FDLTCC Thunder Baseball game vs. Rainy River Community College originally scheduled for Tuesday in Grand Rapids has been postponed due to weather and field conditions. The game has been re-scheduled for Wednesday May 2 at 7:30 p.m. on Mettner Field at Athletic Park in Cloquet.

  The Barnum High School has lost its third coach this spring as long time volleyball coach Corina Newman turned in her letter or resignation last Thursday, April 19th. Newman joins the list of Barnum coaches needing to be replaced before next season begins. Long time girls basketball coach Randy Myhre retired and football coach Kevin Hayley resigned earlier this spring.

  For the second time in as many years, University of Minnesota Duluth junior second baseman Tyra Kerr has secured a spot on the All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference first team while three other Bulldogs -- junior center fielder Michaela Goris, sophomore pitcher Megan Mullen and junior pitcher Julia Nealer -- received all-league second team acclaim.

  The Barnum boys and girls golf teams are hitting the courses again this spring for the first time in over 20 years. The Bombers were originally scheduled to open their season on Tuesday April 19th in Mahtowa, but was cancelled, postponing the first meet until Thursday at Hinckley.
