The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton vs Duluth East boys hockey rivalry continued on Thursday night at Northwoods Credit Union Arena in Cloquet.  While the Greyhounds skated out of town with a 3-2 win the game itself featured a gutty effort by a young Jacks team that didn’t back down from the powerful East squad.

East nabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the first period and it looked for a short time like the game could be one-sided.  Instead of folding the Jacks responded with a Kyle Klatt goal at 3:47 of the second period with an assist going to James Newgren and CEC was within 2-1.  East answered the CEC goal with a tally of their own from Auston Christ to make it a 3-1 game entering the third period.

The Lumberjacks continually worked hard and finally got a reward when Derek Bloom scored from Hunter Roberts and Dylan Johnson at 6:24 of the third period to make things really interesting at 3-2, but that would be all the closer the Jacks would get.

For the game CEC outshot the Greyhounds 33-28 as Lumberjack goalie Zack Strom finished with 25 saves and East goalie Gunnar Howg finished with 31 saves.
