Jacks Soar Past Hawks

The Cloquet Lumberjacks gained some revenge from a match earlier is season when Cloquet lost to Hermantown in a Lake Superior Conference battle. but Wednesday night the Lumberjacks were back in full force as Cloquet swept Hermantown 3-0.

The Lumberjacks with the sweep of Hermantown set up a section final match with the Mora Mustangs Saturday afternoon at Denfeld High School. The Lumberjacks are looking for their first ever trip to the state tournament while Mora is looking for their second trip to the state tournament. The mustangs lone appearance in the state tournament was in 1998.

The Lumberjacks took the first game of the match with a 25-18 victory, Cloquet made it 2-0 when they won the second game of the match by a score of 25-19 and the Lumberjacks made it a sweep with a 25-15 win in the third game of the match.

The Lumberjacks were led by Alex Oakes who finished with 16 set assists, 7 kills, and she also had 2 blocks in the Lumberjacks win. Sami Westendorf added 10 kills and 15 set assists, Olivia Mayasich added 8 kills, and it was Hazel Ericson chipping in with 2 ace serves.

The Hawks were led by Emily Neumann who finished with 20 set assists for Hermantown, she also had 10 digs in the loss. Carly Hansen had 8 kills, Paige Tomlin added 4 kills and Courtney Kaneski ended with 11 digs.

Cloquet improves to 22-7 overall on the season and the Lumberjacks will face the Mustangs Saturday afternoon for the section 7AA title. Hermantown ends it season with a record 22-7.
