A very youthful Cloquet girl’s softball team has started the season on a roll. The Jacks improved to 4-0 on Friday with a 9-0 win over Greenway behind the no-hit pitching of Rachel Smith.

Smith dominated the Raiders without giving up a hit, while striking out 10 and walking four batters in picking up her first victory of the season. Cloquet ace, Katrina Korman, picked up the other three victories for the Jacks.

Not only did Smith dominate on the mound, but she also aided her own cause with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate along with a triple. Korman added a double and an RBI.

The Lumberjacks have also picked up impressive wins over Duluth Central, Duluth East and Superior despite fielding a team that is mainly comprised of players who still do not have a driver’s license. The infield at times looks more like a Time for Tots class than a high school softball team, but what the Jacks lack in varsity experience they more than make up for with ability and proper technique.

On Friday, it was Mariah Smith taking her place behind home plate in place of normal starter Liz Jezierski. Jezierski has been out with mononucleosis, but will return this week. Mariah Smith is the sister of Rachel and was able to join in the history of the first sister-sister combination to throw and catch a no-hitter in the same game for Cloquet High School.

The Lumberjacks will play at Esko Monday
